Nvidia investing $1.5B in SoftBank data center developer behind OpenAI project
Nvidia has announced a $1.5 billion investment in SB Energy, a data center developer backed by SoftBank and OpenAI.
This deal secures Nvidia as the sole compute infrastructure supplier for OpenAI’s Ports-Pike facility near Cincinnati, Ohio.
Additionally, Nvidia will provide up to $105 billion in credit to support the construction of the massive site, which aims to scale from 4.25 to 8 gigawatts.
The project includes a $33 billion natural gas power plant on former U.S.
Department of Energy land, highlighting the critical role of energy in AI infrastructure.
Rising costs for natural gas plants and potential competition with export markets could significantly impact regional energy prices.
This move underscores the deepening financial and operational ties between major AI players and hardware giants.
The scale of the investment reflects the unprecedented demand for high-performance computing resources in the AI era.
